Does anyone know what charges I will have if I buy a boat in the US and
bring it back to Ontario? I know I will have at least the PST/GST but
will there be duty?

Not if it's an American built boat (I'm not aware of any Mexican boat
builder). Yes if builded outside NAFTA countries. If manufactured in a
country other than the USA or Mexico, it will be dutiable at 9.5%.

Older boats, no duty. Register boat if over 10 hp, get a bill for
GST. Outboards rule. Ensure your bill of sale does not include
the trailer, paid taxes, survey costs, removeable accessories,
etc. They require tax on the boat. Barter for the boat, arrange
a price of "one dollar and other valuable considerations." Or,
arrange to win it in a contest, and wait for the IRS in USA to
chase you for income tax, innocently unpaid.

Oh, wait to get charged if you attach an outboard engine of more
than 10 hp, and do not have a receipt for paying the tax. "What
tax?"

The tax discriminates against inboard engined (fixed engine)
boats.

Hi Terry

I appreciate all the info but are we on the same track here?

My question is for a cruiser or any other boat. I may want to purchase
a boat in the US and either trailer or drive across the St.Lawrence back
into Canada. When I come back by road or water, I want to know what
Customs will require and what taxes/duties are required.

Jean wrote that as long as its built in a NAFTA country, there is no
duty. That sounds fair to me. I still have to deal with the GST/PST.
We pay GST for Goods and Services on a purchase like this from a dealer
but not private.
Question: Will Customs charger GST on this item where it is new to Canada?

The answer to PST (I Believe) the same as buying a boat here and you pay
the PST.

Thanks for the info

Steve

Was just browsing around ... info at www.riv.ca indicates to me that when
you finally get around to calling customs, you might want to ask about
paperwork to import the trailer as well as the boat. It would be a shame to
get to the border, have all your boat paperwork in order, pay the pst/gst
.... and then have that friendly border gal say ... ok, get that boat outta
here ... but the trailer stays.

Another thing to remember is state and local sales tax. Oregon and Nevada
for example have zero sales tax and low registration fees. If the boat is
US Federally documented some states still hit you but Nevada will not
register a documented vessel. What you want to do is get the boat moved to
someplace like Astoria Oregon or similar. If it's a very expensive boat
consider trucking it Portland, OR on the Columbia. You will escape (in
Washington state) sales taxes of 8 1/2% and up. However if your home area
deducts the cost of sales taxes paid in other places from the one they will
or may charge it may not matter.
