What is the best way to remove 20+ years of Interlux Bottomcoat on a 33`
sailboat?
I`ve heard of sandblasting or better yet soda blasting
There is also a peeler method out there.
Anyone had any experience with any of the above?
Pro and cons
Can anyone recommend a company in the Midland /Penetang area?
Thanks

If it were on wood, I would use strippers, being on glass, sanding or soda.
In both cases you are probably into substantial cost because it contains
heavy metals so it becomes an environmental problem and needs extra work
(tarping, full masks etc)..

Do you just want to clean it down for fresh paint, or do you want to strip
back to glass? I think there are thinners available that strip it too
depending on which paint was used..

Thanks Greg

I`m changing paint from 20+years of Interlux Bottomcoat to VC 17 so
want to go down to the gelcoat only
Bottom has no pocks but I will coat with tar probably 9 coats then VC 17
Soda blasting sounds like the way to go but was wondering if anyone has used
the mechanical peeler method ( similar machine to the gel-coat remover)
looks like a hand held power planer 3-4" wide with vacuum attachment
Any references of companies that do any of this work would be appreciated
Thanks

I had my Trojan, Soda blasted this past spring, allmost 30 years of
bottom paint. The soda disappeared with the rain, the bottom coat
killed everthing it landed on. The guy doing the soda took off a lot
of the gel coat, so I had to do an epoxy primer, for waterproofing.
I put a Teflon paint on for the bottom paint and it is coming off,
this fall, that is what is left of it, and VC17 is going on. As for
the tar, am not sure if that is the way to go, from what I understand
the VC 17 wants to go on a smooth surface, right on the glass or
primer. Make sure you read all the instructions.
Good Luck Pat Fins & Grins

Pat, you said you put on a teflon antifouling paint. Then you said it's
being replaced by VC17? VC17 is a teflon paint! so youre removing VC17 in
favour of puting VC17 on??

Actually, I put on a Teflon Paint, Pacific Sailor, Swift Sure, It is
just Teflon, and has no antifouling properties, Their claim is that it
is environmently friendly and cleans easily. The VC17M, has a copper
additive, making it a antifouling bottom paint, and is teflon giving a
smooth drag free finish, that is if you sand the primer or gel coat
with 320 grit sandpaper
