Hi,
Bit new to this so...
My (12v) broads cruiser has two sets of batteries switchable via a rotary
switch: Position 1 is a single battery for starting - seems ok.
Position 2 is for a pair of batteries in parallel for running the ancillary
equipment (lights etc) when the engine is off.
Problem is that one or both of the ancillary pair is knackered - won't start
the fluorescents, or the engine.
I have a nearly new car battery, so I'm wondering if I could chuck the two
ancillary batteries and move the good starter bat & wire it up with my
spare, then buy a new starter battery (figure that this is the most critical
componant, and the reduced combined capacity of the ancillary pair would be
better than what I have at the moment)
Question:- is there a problem of combining mismatched batteries, or should
they be a matched pair?
Cheers! >> Stay informed about: Batteries |

Batteries should NEVER be connected in parallel, except for emergency
starting. The reason is that if one goes down it pulls the other one down
with it, and you get two knackered batteries.
They should always be wired up so that either one or the other is supplying
the power, with an emergency solenoid to connect the two together for
starting.
Ideally you should keep one battery just for starting, and the other for
lighting, that way you don't end up with that dreaded clicking noise the
next morning when you come to start up.
They can be charged up from one alternator using a split-charge relay, and
for this reason, should be roughly the same capacity. >> Stay informed about: Batteries |

Thanks for that - probably explains why we have 2 knackered batteries.
Just for clarification, we have 3 batteries - the rotary switch allows us to
switch to a single good one for starting, then on position 2 to a pair for
ancillery use ( these are the ones which are causing probs). So, if I
understand you correctly, we should dump the pair and replace with a single
good one? I suppose that a car battery would do for this if we have candles
for if the capacity isn't sufficient:-)

You will get better life from a battery used for lighting if you use a
leisure type battery. Get as big a battery as you can, given limitations of
space and wallet. >> Stay informed about: Batteries |
