Can anyone tell me where I might be able to buy a rudder to put on an
older kayak I was given. It has a single pin mounting hole. I had
heard Yakima makes a light weight rudder, but I didn't see them on
their web sight.
Thanks, Jerry

I've been looking into that this week myself, and good info seems very
scarce. There are a couple of rudders here:

one from Wilderness Systems, one from Feathercraft. Seems like the
Feathercraft is more of a general application thing, where the
Wilderness Systems one might be specifically for their own boats. No
clue if either would fit your boat (heck, I'm not sure either would
fit MINE, and I've got a WS boat).

But you should probably start with the manufacturer of your kayak to
see if they offer a retrofit.

Hi Jerry,

Yakima makes great footpedals, but I have never heard of an entire
rudder system from them. Typically you see the Yakima footpedals with
a Feathercraft or similar rudder.

The Feathercraft is an easy retrofit, especially if your boat already
has the holes. Seda makes a retrofit for their boats, which is
actually a near universal kit. www.sedakayak.com

The SmartTrack system by Cascade Designs is also a retrofit which can
be adapted to almost any kayak. Their best feature is the toepilot
foot pedals which pivot instead of sliding back and forth, allowing
for solid footbraces and rudder control.

I'm sure there are many other systems avaliable, those are just the
two I personally deal with on a regular basis.

A couple of slots over from the one I store my kayak at is one where they
have a Yakima rudder installed, so they do exist. I've never met the person
though so I can't say what they think about it.
