Archived from groups: rec>boats>building (more info?)

Hi

Before I consider building a steel cruiser, I have the chance to purchase a
30' steel sloop for a reasonable price. The boat was built in 1960, has a
wooden coach house, wooden mast/boom, no shore power and has only seen fresh
water. Haven't seen the boat up close yet.

Questions are:

1. Would the hull be ready for the bone yard at this time (40 years old)?

2. Do 30 foot steel sloops have the ability to sail ok?

3. What are the pros-cons of multi-chine vs rounded chine ? The 30 footer
has a multi-chine.

Thank for any constructive feedback and yes I have surfed the net
extensively to answers for these questions.

Cheers

Skippy Jimmy Joe

Not necessarily, probably not, depends on how she`s been looked after, as
with all boats- get a survey!
The point(s) where steel is bonded to wood are a good place to check, both
for corrosion in the steel and rot in the wood.
Should there be the odd thin spot, steel is pretty easy to repair, no big
deal to cut out a bit and weld in a patch, been there done that!

Some do, some don`t, don`t dismiss the boat out of hand just `cos she`s a
steel 30 footer, at that size she won`t be a lightweight racer, but that`s
not necessarily a bad thing Wink.

Aesthetics- nothing wrong with multi chine (how many chines by the way?)
