bought the boat 3 years ago and it ran 67 to 68 mph on gps at 5200 rpm.
the boat slowed to 60 mph. i had the motor rebuilt and dynoed and now
puts out 500 hp were it was 365 hp from the start. boat now runs 63 to
64 mph with same prop at 4900 rpm.the prop is a 23 pitch mirage any
help would be great.

67.5/5200 is *very* close to 63.5/4900 so prop and hull is performing
the same. My pretty uneducated guess is that you got those extra hp
from making the engine more revy and in the process you lost some torque
in the 5000 rmp range.

Just a guess. I am a sailor an my engine is a 5 hp outboard...

Martin,
That is a real good observation. He sure isn't making torque anymore at
5k rev. I would be willing to bet that he didn't start out with a set
of engine curves before he when and changed things. If the jamoke that
ran dyno gave him the full report, he'd probably know where the prop
load and power curves are going to cross.
But hey - I've only lived in Detroit development labs for thirty years.
Too bad this guy torey doen't know we really race real boats here and
engines aren't an issue.
He might try rec.boats.racing.power

thanks for your response, but the torge was 550 at 4500 rpm and peek hp
was 502 at 5200. the motor was built to specks from another motor that
produced the same power and performed great in the boat it was in and
every part put in was marine performance parts. i have another
question, i damaged the bottom of my boat 2 years ago, just some
gel-coat chips which i had repaired, the boat has ran slower since then
but doing an oil change this season i found metal in the oil and thats
what prompted the rebuild and repower. i thought we found the speed
loss when i found 7 broke valve springs but i guess i was wrong.

Well, given the low level of activity here I don't mind a few
stray dogs. Actually I think one could question the fragmentation
of rec.boats.whatever. When I started to hang out here there was
just rec.boats. As activity balooned new groups were spun off
but now we should maybe consider the opposite.

Cheers,

Yeah but I'll bet the acceleration is "much better". Ok, you have not
changed the gearing or the prop pitch or the rpm (much), so no matter what
the hp (365, 500, 1000), your speed (velocity) will be about the same. So
what's your goal ... speed? Assuming 4900 is your new WOT, and provided your
drivetrain take the 500 hp, try greater pitch props ... and maybe cut back
on the Big Macs Smile
