This motor came on a '63 Thompson I am restoring. I took it into the water
after 2 years of work. The motor will propel the boat hesitantly, but even
though there is a vent opening in the bottom plate to allow air into the
system, the boat will sputter and die unless I leave the access panel open.
close the panel and the engine will sputter and quit. any suggestions would
be helpful, I have removed and cleaned the carbs, cleaned the screen over
the opening, changed the plugs, and run fresh gas. >> Stay informed about: 1962 Johnson 75 hp |

What kind of shape are the coils in? Old coils become brittle, crack and
short to ground. This is a very common problem on older outboards. I've
just had the coils replaced in a 1973 Johnson outboard. Before replacement
it was difficult to start, wouldn't idle very well and would quit
frequently. Oddly enough it would run at high speed better than mid to low
throttle.
New coils, problem solved. Easy to start and runs at all speeds well
including idling. Hope this helps.
