Post subject: 15 hp Johnson prop
Archived from groups: uk>rec>boats>motor (more info?)

I am new to Outboard motors and fixing.

Living in the BAhamas, the dealer has had my 3.5 hp for 2 months waiting for
a part.

In the meantime, I have purchased a used 15hp.

Last weekend we were running full throttle close to shore as we were trying
to get home quick, I slightly grazed the sandy bottom for a bit and the
motor started reving up while losing speed. Slowing the boat down to an idle
and increasing rpm's we were able to get home.

I have removed the cotter pin, nut, bushing and finally the prop. I expected
a pin in the prop or in the inner spline. Nothing.

I am asking for some knowledge here, do I have to replace the prop or is
there a possible other problem. My 3.5 had a drive pin in the prop.

I really do not want to take this motor in for repairs, I may never see it
again.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I suspect that your prop is fitted with a rubber bush between a splined
centre boss and the prop casting ityself. The idea is that the rubber slips
when the prop hits something. Unfortunately often the rubber grinds away as
it slips so it will no longer transmit full power before it slips.

I would have thought tha someone on the Bahamas could effect a repair - w
euse dto send ours to Steel Developments in South London UK, but that is not
much use to you.

I can think of some bodges involving forcing some thin metal/wood rods
between the rubber ands which ever face is slipping and then pouring in
epoxide, but I can not guarentee it will work and for goodness sake do not
hit anything afterwards - I take no responsibility for such actions.

The other thing I have known give your symptoms is the splines where the
verticle drive shaft is fitted into the crankshaft wear. They can drive at
low speed but slip under power.

Hope this is of some use

Thanks for the info, Tony.

I did just that, inserted 2 metal pins between the rubber and brass spline
and reassembled. We were able to go out a few times at slow speed. Enought
to catch a few dozen fish.

I did locate a new hub in Florida and received it yesterday. Should be full
throttle by the weekend.

Thanks
Dave
